Escrow vs pay on delivery: which is safer in Nigeria?

Pay on delivery and escrow both try to solve trust. Here is how they compare on risk, cost, reach, and who they really protect.

Pay on delivery (POD) is popular in Nigeria because the buyer only hands over cash when the item arrives. Escrow solves the same trust problem in a different way. Neither is automatically better; they fit different sales.

This guide compares them honestly so you can choose per deal.

What pay on delivery actually protects

POD mainly reassures the buyer, and only up to a point:

  • The buyer sees the parcel before paying, but often cannot fully test quality at the door.
  • The seller carries the risk: rejected deliveries, wasted trips, cash handling, and courier or agent fraud.
  • It only works where a dispatch rider can physically reach, so remote buyers are cut off.

What escrow protects

Escrow protects both sides and removes the standoff:

  • The buyer's money is held until delivery is confirmed, so they are covered against non-delivery.
  • The seller knows the money is real and locked before shipping, with no cash to handle and no fake alert to fear.
  • It works anywhere in Nigeria, and for services and digital goods that POD cannot cover at all.

Cost and logistics

POD hides its cost in failed deliveries, return trips, and the risk of cash going missing. Escrow charges a small, predictable fee per transaction, keeps a clear record of the deal, and lets you require payment before you spend money shipping.

When to use which

Use POD for local, lower-value physical items where a rider can reach the buyer and quality is easy to judge on sight. Use escrow for higher-value items, buyers outside your delivery zone, services and digital goods, milestone or staged work, and any time you want the money guaranteed before you ship.

Frequently asked questions

Is pay on delivery safe for sellers?

Only partly. Sellers still face rejected deliveries, wasted logistics costs, cash-handling risk, and courier fraud, and POD does not work for remote buyers or digital goods.

Is escrow better than pay on delivery?

It depends on the sale. Escrow is stronger for higher-value items, remote buyers, services, and staged work, because funds are guaranteed before shipping and disputes are evidence-based.

Can I offer both escrow and pay on delivery?

Yes. Many sellers use POD for nearby, low-value orders and escrow for remote or high-value deals.

Does escrow work for digital products?

Yes. Escrow covers services and digital goods, which pay on delivery cannot.
